Innovation and Economic Impact

Congratulations to our first I-Corps Laureate! Pictured here with Tolulope Perrin-Stowe from SDSU’s Technology Transfer Office, Samantha explored how her research could meet industrial needs.

Offered through the NSF I-Corps Hub: Desert and Pacific Region, the program combines customer discovery, mentorship, and entrepreneurial training.

Today’s presentations echoed the spirit of Theodore Roosevelt’s “Man in the Arena” passage from his 1910 speech at the Sorbonne, reminding us that growth comes from stepping beyond the familiar, embracing uncertainty, and daring to try.

Better Together

Earlier this year, we joined the Engle lab for a “supergroup” meeting at Scripps Research. Today, we kept the exchange going with the Romero group at UC San Diego.

In mixed teams, we tackled chemistry and total synthesis problems, compared strategies, and hit a few wrong turns. There was room to ask questions, make mistakes, and change our minds. That’s how science is made: by explaining a reasoning and being willing to rethink it.

Research updates from students from both teams reminded us how fascinating reaction mechanisms are, and how much evidence it takes to support one.

A specialist in asymmetric catalysis, Hrishikesh joins us from IIT Ropar (PhD: Chatterjee group). We look forward to the exciting chemistry ahead!
